Outlaw Star: Sword of Wind was the proposed sequel concept to the Outlaw Star anime.

Production History

In 1998, Morning Star Studio and Takehiko Itō worked on a concept for a single episode OVA, set three years after the events of Outlaw Star, called Outlaw Star 2: Sword of Wind.[1] The proposal was posted on the Morning Star Studio's website. The proposal was intended to be presented to Bandai Visual instead of Sunrise Studios. The story revolved around Gene Starwind searching for Fred Luo after he disappears in attack returning from the Oracion System and acquiring a new ship called Sword of Wind.

However, the whereabouts of the Outlaw Star, Aisha Clan-Clan or "Twilight" Suzuka and Melfina's prominence in the story is never expanded upon within the proposal. Fred Luo's appearance in the Angel Links episode, "Guardian Angel", suggested some type of production had begun on Sword of Wind and that the intention may have been to create a crossover with Sword of Wind. However, Sword of Wind was never produced and was later scrapped for a manga sequel concept, Outlaw Star 2: Retaliation.[1]

Sword of Wind begins three years after the events of the Galactic Leyline, the year is Toward Star 160. Melfina has gone off to college to pursue an education, but, Gene Starwind (now 23 years old) and Jim Hawking (14 years old) are still struggling to repay and work off the debts they've accumulated since acquiring the Outlaw Star. Their arguments with each other have become such that the two no longer see eye-to-eye and go their separate ways.[1]

Meanwhile, Fred Luo travels to the Oracion System to meet with the Links Group, a major corporation that provides free protection for Frontier colonies from space pirates. However, his meeting does not go as planned, Fred does not meet their expectations (they make presumptions based on his sexuality[2]). During the trip back from Oracion, the transport ship Fred is on is attacked.[1]

When Gene learns of the accident watching a news report on television, he abandons his present priorities to investigate and find out what happened to Fred. During his travels, Gene meets Dr. Sputink (34 years old), a space engineer from Pitor, who builds him a ship dubbed Sword of Wind. Dr. Sputnik helps Jim open his own business and Jim becomes romantically involved with a young woman named Diva (14 years old).[1]
